Irene Basken

Irene Jackson Basken born July 11, 1935, the tenth of twelve children to Mr. Lynn Wood Jackson and Ether Snow Jackson. Seven boys Nehemiah Jackson, Jermiah Jackson, Lenwood Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Jessie Jackson, A.J. Jackson and William Henry Jackson. Five girls James Etta Jackson, Ethel Lee Jackson, Irene Jackson, Carrie Louise Jackson and Maggie Parthania Jackson. Irene excepted Christ July 1945 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Weaver Rd. under the pastorage of Rev D.S. Battle. She was active from Sunshine band to senior choir and Sunday School Teacher. She attended Weaver Elementary School, Geeter High School and Tenn. Trade School for tailoring and alteration. On August 14, 1953, She entered in holy matrimony with Lester Basken they took their vows serious for 68 years. On August 8th, 2021, the Lord called him home. To this union four children were born Sheron Devora, Leslie Malone(decease), Marilyn Bernale(decease), and Chrislyn Basken(decease). Irene was employed for eight years by Susan dress Manufactory, 16 years as supervisor of sample department at Ely & Walker, part-time at her friend's alteration shop Mrs. Frances Williams and later her own bridesmaid dressing & alteration. In 1971 her and her husband was called to Middle Baptist Church Whitehaven as Pastor she joined under his pastorage and worked faithfully in the teaching ministry especially the Mass Choir, Sunday School, NBC, and Friday prayer group. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Sheron Hamilton, 7 grandchildren Rondalyn N. Martin, Sheronda D. Wade, Cortney D.Wade, Gerald Hamilton Jr.,Jeremy Hamilton, Darius Basken, and Carlos West. 10 great-grandchildren Stephen M. Martin, Myah N. Martin, Kaitlyn I. Kiser, Khloe N. McKinney, Kree A. Foster Lori Wade, Gerald Hamilton III, Jeremy Hamilton Jr., Hailey Hamilton, Martez West and Iverson West. 1 great-great granddaughter, Kinsley S. Martin. Two sisters Mrs. Carrie Welch Memphis, TN and Mrs. Maggie Rogers Chicago IL one sister-in-law Mrs. Naomi Jackson Memphis, TN. My godchildren, Mr. & Mrs. Larry Woodruff and Rev. Robert Matthews. God gave me the most wonderful host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends here and all over that called to see if I needed anything. Thank God for my Middle Baptist Church family and Pastor who stayed in touch.
