Jewel Stanbrough

Jewell Dean Stewart was born March 2, 1950, to James “Jimmie” and Betty Stewart in Detroit, MI. She attended Second Grace Methodist Church and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior while there. She attended Pattengill Elementary and McMichael Middle School. She was a scholar in the Detroit Public School System and graduated early in 1967 from Northwestern High School. In 1972 she attended Highland Park Community College and received her associate degree. Her love for people and the community led her to attend Wayne State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in social work in 1987. In 1999 she received her master’s in counseling from the University of Detroit Mercy. She used her training as a social worker and counselor to impact the lives of children and adults in Detroit and surrounding areas. Jewell was employed with the HeadStart program, the Sophie Wright Settlement, Aurora Health and the Michigan Health Center. She was an avid volunteer within the community. One of those areas was the Wayne State University NYSP program where she assisted with the needs of the children. Jewell cared deeply for the inner-city youth of Detroit and volunteered with the youth literacy program and as an anti-violence and self-esteem workshop leader in the public schools. She was a member of a bowling league for several years and enjoyed playing board games and dancing. She was a member of a local Detroit Travel social club. Jewell was very outgoing and never met a stranger. She loved to talk and express herself freely and openly about whatever topics she was deeply passionate about. In 1972 she married James Courtney Stanbrough and to this union two children were born, Trevell James and Tiffeny DeAnn. She was very active in the lives of her children and volunteered as Troop Mom with her son’s Boy Scout Troop 289 and was also an instrumental marching band parent volunteer. She was also the president of her daughter’s basketball booster club and deemed “ the coolest teen mom” on Tiffeny’s athletic teams. Jewell’s desire was to be fully devoted and involved in both of her young children’s extracurricular activities. She enjoyed movie nights with her grandkids, baking cookies, zoo trips, and restaurant outings with her grandsons. Jewell also enjoyed doing puzzles and pamper “hair” days with her granddaughter Arielle. Jewell was affectionately known as “Moochie” by her “Momma” Betty and was a very animated and lively storyteller with “lots of sass” and humor. Everyone loved to hear a story from Jewell. After retiring from her professional career, she decided to reside at the Meadowcrest Senior Apartments in Southfield, Michigan. While there, she used her love for community engagement by welcoming new residents, hosting monthly birthday celebrations, and organizing the Black History Programs, receiving a certificate of appreciation for her ongoing contributions and efforts to build community. Under the love and care of her family, Jewel Dean Stanbrough went home to be with the Lord while at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, TN on March 30, 2025. She had recently moved to be with her daughter and family in Olive Branch, MS. She fought a warrior’s fight, but the Lord called His valiant and persevering daughter home to rest in peace. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Harry Lewis, her brother Jerome “Butch” Stewart, maternal grandmother Bernice McCalope (Bell) and step grandfather John Bell, her parents James Stewart and Betty Stewart, her beloved nephew Quindon Stewart, her paternal grandfather Major Stewart, uncle Eddie Lee Stewart, great aunt Louise Boyd and her Uncle Thomas “Tommy” Lewis. Jewell leaves to cherish her memory her younger sister Deborah Stewart of Southfield, MI that loved her big sister dearly; her children Trevell James (Tabitha) Stanbrough of Fairburn, GA, Tiffeny DeAnn (Hassan) Saleem of Olive Branch, MS; grandchildren Isaiah Saleem, Jadon Saleem, Josiah Saleem, Arielle Stanbrough, Amari James; great aunt Ruby Lee Stewart; lifelong sister-friends Quidona “Donna” Settles, Jackie Bryant, Dorothy Thorns, Lillian Payne; cousin Ella Freeman (more like a sister); and a host of family and friends. She will be tremendously missed by her family and friends
