October 5, 1941 - March 24, 2021
Mr. Elmer “Toot” Wilburn, Sr., was born October 5, 1941, to William Cassell Wilburn and Bessie Williams Wilburn. Elmer was a graduate of Linwood High School in Vaughan, Mississippi. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee, during the early 1960s bringing along with him his brother, Louis. After moving to Memphis, Elmer met the love of his life, Beatrice “Dolly Mae” Barnes. They were united in holy matrimony in March 1963; their union was blessed with three children, Larita “Sweet Thang” Wilburn, Maria “Fat” Wilburn Milton and Elmer “Main” Wilburn, Jr. Mr. Wilburn accepted Christ and became a Christian at McKellar Avenue Church of Christ under the leadership of Brother Charlie Shead, where he served as a faithful member and Sunday school teacher. Elmer loved dogs, hunting and fishing, but his passion was cooking and baking. He was head chef for over thirty years for The Peabody Hotel – Memphis, Holiday Inn Racquet Club and Holly Hills Country Club. After many years of being a chef, Elmer became an entrepreneur. In 1982, he opened Florida Street Sundry and Latham Grocery, and in 1983, he became the owner of Mississippi Corner Grocery. Elmer was a very hard worker and his favorite quote was, “Can’t make money sleeping.” After being in business for so long, he became Granddad, Dad, Pops, and “Big Red” in the community. He was loved by so many and would help anyone. Elmer was a wonderful husband, a great dad, a terrific granddad, and a very funny person full of jokes. Elmer was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mrs. Beatrice Wilburn; his son, Keetha Barnes; mother, Bessie Wilburn; father, Cassell Wilburn; brothers, Louis Wilburn, Ervin Wilburn, and Earl Wilburn; his sister, Hazel Geran; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Wilburn; and his mother-in-law, Clara Briggs. Mr. Elmer Wilburn leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his wonderful legacy: his children, Larita Wilburn, Maria Milton, Lolita (Peter) Showers and Elmer Wilburn, Jr.; his grandchildren raised as his children, Kesi (Edward) Basil of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Robert McNeal, Jr., and Murray Milton, Jr., of Bamberg, Germany; his sister, Mattie Donnell of Yazoo County, Mississippi; brothers, Homer Wilburn of Chicago, Illinois, and Donnie Wilburn, Sr., of Jackson, Mississippi; two sisters-in-law, Hattie Wilburn of Memphis, Tennessee, and Larita Turner of Chicago, Illinois; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren; his god-son and dedicated employee, Carlo Adams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his “furry dog” Britt-Britt, to cherish his loving memory.
