Mae Elrod

Mae Ellen Elrod was born Mae Ellen Brookins on July 31, 1949, to the union of the late Charlie Bell and Willie B. Brookins. She was the third oldest of four children; her siblings include the late Ernest McGregor, the late Mattie B. Johnson, and her only surviving sibling, Brenda Malone. Mae graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1967. Following high school, she started her career at Bell South, where she worked for thirty years until her retirement. At a young age, Mae married the late Eddie Lee Elrod and gained a stepson, James “Slaw” Malone. Shortly after their union, Mae was blessed with her one and only child, Cheryl Elrod. In addition to her daughter and her sister, she is also survived by her grandchildren, Tracey James and Trayvon James, and her two great-grandchildren, Taylor Petty and Lapecus Smith, Jr. Mae was also a grandmother to her grandchildren’s siblings. She referred to them as “The James Gang” – Tracy, Tearenea, Terric, Demetrius, Danetria, Tykala, Tracy, Tracy, Travious, Tracilla, and James. Mae also loved and helped raise her nieces and nephews, Reginald McGregor, Mona Johnson, Jackie Johnson and Richard Malone. She also has a host of great-nieces and great-nephews as well. Mae was a blessing to everyone around her. She will truly be missed.
