Terry Figgs Sr.

Sgt. Terry Carlese Figgs Sr. was born on June 15th, 1956, to the late Jessie Turner and Ruth E. Figgs in Marks, Mississippi. He was affectionately referred to as “T. Figgs or Big Dogg.” Terry was called home peacefully on September 25, 2025, while surrounded by his closest loved ones. The LORD called saying, “Terry, this battle is not yours; come unto me and take your rest.” Terry was a proud graduate of the Quitman County School System and went on to further his education at Coahoma Community College. Answering the call to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably and received an honorable discharge. Sgt. Figgs earned numerous commendations for his dedication and conduct. His awards included the Rifle Marksman Badge, Meritorious Masts, Letters of Appreciation, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Good Conduct Medal, while serving in the Marines. These honors reflected the discipline, integrity, and commitment he brought to his service. During his time, Terry often spoke fondly of his experiences in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he had the opportunity to play football and participate in various sports and activities, he greatly enjoyed, excelled and cherished. He also shared fond memories of his time in Japan as he told stories he loved to tell and a place he always hoped to visit again one day. In the late 1980s, Terry began a long and dedicated career at the Federal Correctional Institution. He served faithfully for 23 years before retiring, earning the respect of colleagues and supervisors alike. His commitment to service, both in the military and in federal corrections, reflected his strong sense of duty, discipline, and quiet leadership. Following his retirement, Terry poured his heart into coaching Little League football, spending 25 years shaping the lives of young people in the Whitehaven community. Terry confessed his life in Christ at an early age at Silent Grove M.B. Church in Marks, Mississippi under the leadership of Rev. Ezra Towner Sr., Pastor. The message of Christ never left Terry’s spirit as always taught by his mother, Ruth. Terry was united in holy matrimony to Nicole Alexander, and their union was lovingly shared for 17 years ending in a life-long friendship. To this union, three children were born: Trenivius, Terry Jr. (preceded him in death), and Ulysses. Mr. Terry Figgs Sr. leaves to cherish his memory his devoted children, Trenivius Figgs-Alexander and Ulysses Brisbon, both of Memphis, TN; and two beloved grandchildren, Khloé Norwood and Terri Figgs of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by two sisters, Josephine Figgs of Mansfield, OH, and Patricia Cooper of Detroit, MI; and one devoted brother, Billy Figgs of Southaven, MS. In addition, he leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Patricia Figgs of Chicago, IL, and Betty Figgs of Marks; MS; his goddaughter, Cojuana Hinkle; and a dear lifelong friend, Paul Clark. Terry will be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends who loved and cherished him deeply. He will be reunited in paradise with his oldest son, Terry Carlese Figgs Jr.; his parents, Jessie Turner and Ruth E. Figgs; five brothers, James Barfield Figgs, Truman Figgs, Jimmy Figgs, Reverend Lawrence Figgs, and Michael Figgs; and three sisters, Shirley Mae Carter, Maryland Jean Tate, and Charlene Figgs.
